Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) has expanded its luxury Kimpton Hotels brand to Edinburgh.

Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel is the second UK location for the brand, following the opening of Kimpton Fitzroy London in October 2018 (for a review of this property click here). Both hotels were formerly operating under The Principal brand.

IHG said the opening of the 184-room, 15-suite Charlotte Square hotel marked the group’s “return to the luxury market in Edinburgh.”

The property in UNESCO-listed New Town has views of Edinburgh Castle and occupies seven connected Georgian townhouses.

Rooms come with yoga mats and a ‘Forgot It, We’ve Got it’ service offering various essentials. The hotel also offers a complimentary drinks hour at its BABA Bar and free fitness classes at its gym. Treatments are also available at its spa.

Last year IHG and property owners Covivio (formerly Fonciere des Regions) agreed to rebrand and operate 12 hotels operating under the Principal and De Vere brands, as well as one pipeline hotel.

Kimpton properties are set to open this year in Glasgow and Manchester. An Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts will also open in Edinburgh.

Karan Khanna, IHG’s Managing Director, UK and Ireland, said:

“We are very excited to build our presence in the luxury market in Scotland as we introduce the Kimpton brand. Edinburgh has a real demand for a lifestyle luxury brand and I’m confident that Kimpton’s relaxed approach to luxury will suit the market well.”

IHG currently has 345 hotels operating under eight brands in the UK, including Hotel Indigo, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn.

Executives have said the group is targeting the luxury market; it recently acquired Regent Hotels and Resorts, launched upscale brand Voco and bought Bangkok-based Six Senses Hotels, Resorts and Spas.
