Iberia has launched a new service enabling customers to have their luggage collected from their home address and checked in ahead of their arrival at the airport.

The “Bag on Board” service (shortened to BoB, but not be confused with the airline industry’s buy-on-board concept) is initially available to customers based in the Barcelona and Madrid areas, and costs €15 for the first piece of luggage and €5 for each additional piece.

Passengers on all routes departing Barcelona and Madrid can use BoB, except on flights to the US, Israel and Senegal.

Staff pick up luggage from the designated address (anywhere in Madrid, Barcelona, or their suburbs, at private homes or flats, hotels, or offices), and seal it in the presence of the customer, before checking it in at the airport.

The baggage will then travel through to the destination where it can be picked up on the carousel as normal.

The service can be booked online at iberia.com or by telephone, and the pick-up time can be altered or cancelled up to two hours before the chosen schedule. Customers can also trace their luggage in real time via email or SMS updates.

Bag on Board is similar to the Airportr service, which operates at a number of UK airports including Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton, with partner carriers including Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific, Easyjet, Finnair, American Airlines and British Airways.
