British Airways has created a limited edition whisky which it will serve to customers, but not until 2031.

The Centenary Cask – created to celebrate the carrier’s 100th birthday and also to mark World Whisky Day on May 18 – has been mixed and poured at the Inchdairnie distillery in Fife, Scotland.

The spirit will mature over the next 12 years, before being decanted into 300 limited-edition bottles and served onboard in 2031.

According to BA the cask is made of American oak – a nod to the up to 30 journeys the carrier makes across the Atlantic each day – with a cask head made of French oak, a tribute to the first flight to Paris made by BA forerunner AT&T in 1919.

In addition Inchdairnie has created a Centenary Cask programme, with 12 casks set to be filled on August 25 (BA’s official 100th anniversary), and available for purchase between now and September.

Commenting on the news Kelly Stevenson, British Airways’ Wine and Beverage Manager, said:

“Celebrating our centenary is all about honouring our airline’s history, as well as looking to the future.  Inchdairnie has a modern and innovative approach to whisky distilling and we’ve incorporated touches with a nod to our history. In years to come our customers will be able to enjoy it from the comfort of their seat – we know it will be worth the wait.”

The Centenary Cask is the latest in a series of limited-edition products designed to celebrates BA’s centenary, from the Speedbird 100 IPA in partnership with Brewdog, to British Airways-branded Marmite jars.
