OK it has finally landed in the UK today, with people lining up the length of Regent Street to get their hands on it.

Anyone tried one out yet – and what are your thoughts?

a superb tool for magazines , books and lesire reading as well as a gigantic GPS.

A serious buisenss too (yes) saves you carrying a wad of papers to a meeting. other than that, i prefer a lap top for data entry.

You can save some money by purchasing at Dixons tax free in the airport; even better if you are flying through LHR/STN/EDI/GLA and you can get BAA Worldpoints on top of your spend.

Kaicat75… if you like the iPhone style of movement/interaction and all the apps (both personal, business and entertainment) that are available then you will love the iPad….

note: MartynSinclair doesn’t have an iPad or even an iPhone so take what he says about it being a liesure reader with a grain of salt. He’s also way to busy trying to back up his 64Gb hard drive… what a joke!

Overall I think you will find the iPAd to be very effective and possibly a replacement for a laptop… it’s not perfect, but add a few third party apps and you’ll enjoy it a lot.

Thank you VintageKrug for the value/savings tip!!

If you read the reviews you will see that the majority of users like the iPad and it’s not just a fad, the iPad is a big step in the direction of future technology… watch: more will come…

Devices using the droid OS which is basically an open source platform are pushing hard into the handheld market and my guess is that if you don’t like Apple and want to wait for a year or so then you will see a competitive product based on the droid OS…

My original point above was: to stay safe/secure in a wireless world my advice is to sync and backup your files over securel links only.. such as to SwissDisk which is end-to-end encrypted… protect your identity, protect your data… stay secure and safe out there no matter what device or service you use! 🙂

    @HonestLogic.

I do really like the Apple brand and since my earlier post on this thread now own a great macbook pro.

Sadly though the iPad is an iFad. It is not a big step in technology, it is about 5 steps back.

This however is not to say tablets are not the way forward, I still think there is a market for them. Albeit not at Apples pricing and desire to tell you how you should use the web.

“The whole web in your hands” Really??

The majority of owners and those blogging about it are apple fanboys who seem to think Apple & Steve Jobs are more important than life itself.

Honest Logic, please dust the cobwebs off your reading glasses. Had you read my posts in full you would actually understand the point i was making about online back ups.

    1. Firstly, try uploading 64gb of data and tell me how long it takes
    2. Are you comfortable with sensative commercial data, encrypted or otherwise being stored on 3rd party servers.
    3. What due diligence have you undertaken on any 3rd party storage company.
    4. Have you tried synching files
    5. What happens if you need tio reinstall or access and there is no internet connecion
    5. The iPAD is ideal for the leisure market and as a handy storage system to take files from meeting to meeting.
    6. As a serious business tool, i think not.

Suggest you poke your head into the real world Honest Logic and understand the PRACTICAL use of the hardware and appreciate more about responsable data storage. I approached Swissdisk after your post and invited them to demo. The fact we still use the current back up and storage system should explain what happened.

Online back ups are good but i still challenge you to show me how to upload and synch 64 gb of data in a few hours, hence we use offline back ups on the road on server back ups when time permits.

I am always happy to learn if you have a solution.

Have a wonderfull and IT trouble free weekend

Honest Logic, take a deep breath and lets ask the audience. You sound as if you are about to burst!!

(PS – just out of curiosity and this is a serious question – if you are storing secure data, which i presume you are on Swissdisk, have your IT department / you / anyone on behalf of you undertaken any indpendant research or do you take the view (no sarcasm, I promise) that Swissdisk are secure becasue they say they are…………..

All i know is that our PI insurers wouldnt pay out if we couldnt show we had independantly researched any 3rd party IT storage company. I hope you take the time to answer as I am wondering why you are so agitated about my post.

This does provoke some heated debate. As someone who mainly reads the posts, I felt compelled to contribute as I am a lawyer specialing in computer data issues.

In simple terms, as the law stands, it is the absolute responsabilty of the business entity buying services from online storage companies such as Swissdisk (and others) to satisfy themselves that their firms data being stored on shared servers is secure. We advise all our clients to undertake their own due diligence when using any external server, outside their control. The contract small print will always enable firms offering online storage to cover themselves in the event of data being lost , stolen or hacked out out of their system.

We recommend clients to use multiple offline back up systems as they are far more secure and mope importantly remain in the sole control of the owner of the data.

I am not quite sure which angle HonestLogic is coming from. Whilst he makes a lot of sense about non sensitive data, I would disagree where the data bieng uploaded is business sensative.

Mark – would you mind giving us your opinion on 3 best & 3 worst (limits) on the iPad?

    Thanks Oz

Recently got the iPad – 3g in the US. I figured getting online in the US can be a hassle, especially as roaming data rates are so ridiculous. You can sign off and on the 3g plan with AT&T as you wish – a month is as little as 15 bucks, which is probably 1 or 2 days wifi charges in a hotel.

As for the iPad, although our suspicions that it is simply a big iPhone are correct, it’s the interface that wins your heart. It’s just so fluid and clean, and the screen is fantastic. Try the new Kayak app for the iPad and you’ll just fall for it. Typing is a breeze, and something about that size screen makes the New York Times a joy to read. Verdict: surprisingly brilliant. Sometimes it’s not what it does, but how it does it.

I work in a department of 7 who are travelling for up to 2 weeks on 2 weeks off, 52 weeks a year. Like so many others, we rely on the receipt of documents rather than data transmission of documents.

Where the iPAD works for us is the simplicity and ease that documents can be sent, stored, read, but best of all, presented to the end user. Simply hand the tablet over like a single sheet document and it can be read, approved without the need for masses of papers, heavy lap tops and several different USB’s. Contracts can be ammended, photos edited, plans revised.

Newspapers can be read, books stored, magazine subscriptions kept up to date. Our IT worked in tandem with senior management, to make sure the iPAD could be incorporated into our working model, because never before has there been a machine that has the potential to encourage a paperless society. The problem with the iPhone is that the screen is too small, the main comment about the iPAD being a big telephone is just unfair.

Where the iPAD fails for us is for complex data creation and transmissions. However, with a little bit of brain storming we found a solution which resolved this issue.

A great machine for a company that is and will remain windows based for pc’s and lap tops, but as a mobile device, it doesnt get much better “for us”.

ChesterSimons, nice post! note, this type of iPad user is exactly who can benefit from using a secure Multi-User account at SwissDisk… it’s half the annual price of MobileMe and there are some great webDAV sync apps like GoodSync to keep your files updated.

the iPad OS supports webDAV technology so if you are looking for apps or clients there are a variety of them out there to make the iPad do almost anything you want! enjoy and stay safe out there! Happy Trails

HL – if you want to advertise SwissDisk then perhaps speak to the Business Traveller crew about becoming a sponsor and paying for the privilege rather than touting for business in this forum.

Either that or give me your email address and i can send you all my mail seeing if i want viagra and claims to riches of dead people or corporate sweepstakes. Seems only fair.
