iPlayer lets you download and store programmes on your laptop or ipad for upto 30 days. You then have upto 7 days from when you start to view the programme to finish watching it, So download before you go!

The filmon was good for streaming live UK TV, but for BBC iPlayer, ITV Player & 4OD, you do need VPN connected, plenty out there. was using http://www.laptoptelly.com in KL while back, did the trick.

I’ve been traveling around Europe for a year now… To be honest you do need some form of entertainment when away from the UK, not so much in the Summer but definitely in the Winter. I used expat shield but it gave me loads of toolbars then crashed my lap-top…I suspect some spyware.
Lately I’ve been using UKTVAccess, did the trick for ITV, BBC, 4OD etc, easy enough when away.

As with Cheerguy, I use Expat Shield. Generally pretty good, though watch out for all sorts of garbage that comes with it. You can also try British Tv Abroad. works better, but you must pay for it.

if you simply want to watch live UK TV on your iPhone/ipad, you can do worse than download FilmOn. Depending where you are this can either be free or paid for. so far, have managed to get it free, though probably not so reliable.

I just downloaded FilmOn, it asked me for my location but all I see are s. African channels and I can’t get or switch to bbc, itv etc. any ideas please?

Try the site mentioned by northseatiger, although ITV seems to work better than BBC. About £6/month.

Note no one has mentioned Slingbox.

I’ve got an old version of Slingbox and it work’s a treat. Effectively I have my own TV when I travel overseas, I can change channels on my Sky+ box, watch stuff I’ve downloaded and choose from my hundreds of (crap) Sky channels.

Tis a good wee widget, picture quality is fairly average however, it is more than enough for those boring nights in *random* hotel.

    Regards.

I am currently midway through a 2 day free trial using:

    http://www.thaiexpat.tv

The only problem so far is the internet connection speed. For it to work effectively, you need faster internet connections than the hotel offers – 2mb at least…

BUT – I did see a clear Sky News (in Germany) with about a 4 minute delay….

I’ve found using a standard VPN service is the best way to get decent quality iplayer streaming when travelling. You might find it worth taking a look at http://www.watchuktvabroad.org for tips on how to choose one.

There are quite a few UK VPNs you can use. I watched the football in Dubai on Sky last week with one.

You might want to check ‘uktvaccess’ which is a service provider who offers legitimate access to UK on demand services like iPlayer from anywhere you have access to an Internet broadband connection. google it and on the website you’ll get all the information step by step for the set up.
it’s a private network that connects you to a server in the UK by giving you an IP address. you need to pay around 4 quid a month but no ads no pop ups! I have been using it for a long time with no problem.
    good luck

Missing Corrie dreadfully, I looked into all these products, though laptoptelly is a new one to me. Problem was always the same – slow internet. Here in S. Africa we cannot get more than 2mbps with a 20 gb a month limit. We rarely get speed above 1.5mbps.

When traveling, looking forward to nice high speed internet in hotels, I rarely got speeds much more than 1mbps, and often a lot less, even in 5 star hotels.

Having a freesat box in Lugano I now just record all the omnibus episodes then have a monster Corrie fest when I get back. Sad really eh? 😉

LP – I use Thai expat TV for most UK channels and it works a treat, especially for Sky News… and ITV…

I will declare an interest in that the owner Wes, is a friend of mine. If you go on the web site and click on Free Trial, you will get exactly that… I use it regularly and it works very well….
