British Airways will temporarily close the security area within its Heathrow T5 First Wing this week.

The move is to allow for the installation of new CT scanners, which will enable customers to leave electronic devices and liquids in their hand luggage during security checks.

The UK government has set a deadline of June 2024 for major airports to replace existing 2D screening technology with more advanced CT security scanners.

As well as eliminating the need for passengers to remove liquids and large electrical items during checks, the scanners will also ultimately enable the lifting of the 100ml limit on liquids.

British Airways has provided Business Traveller with the following statement:

“From Tuesday 9 January, the First Wing security area is temporarily closed while Heathrow installs new security technology. All eligible customers will be directed to designated security lanes in South Fast Track Security during this period.”

Business Traveller has requested more information on the scheduled reopening date for the First Wing security area, and will post any response here.

Note that the First Wing check-in desks will remain open for use by eligible customers, who will then be directed to South Fast Track Security area.

British Airways opened the First Wing at T5 in 2017, for use by First passengers and Executive Club Gold customers. Features include a dedicated security channel and direct route to the Galleries First lounge and the Concorde Room.

The temporary closure of the carrier’s First Wing security follows the recent relocation of its Club check-in area at T5.

UK airports are working to get their security areas upgraded to the new requirements in time for the June deadline.

Birmingham airport is currently in the midst of building a new £50 million security hall, and Leeds Bradford recently announced that its new equipment would be fully operational by February.
