Marriott has opened the first Scottish property under its W Hotel Brand, located within the mixed use St James Quarter in Edinburgh’s East End.
W Edinburgh has been a long time coming – the 244-room hotel was first announced back in 2016, when the brand was still operated by Starwood Hotels prior to its merger with Marriott.
The property is housed across three buildings around St James Square, including the striking Ribbon Building which has attracted nicknames from The Walnut Whip to other slightly less desirable monikers.
Features include a rooftop deck with 360-degree views and Japanese-Brazilian-Peruvian fusion restautant SUSHISAMBA, as well as Brazilian-inspired speakeasy named Joao’s Place, the brand’s signature W Lounge, a fitness centre and spa facilities.
Interiors have been inspired the volcanic rock on which the coastal city is built, with dark ‘charred wood’ panelling, and copper touches including a fringe ceiling feature in the W Lounge.
The hotel joins W London (which opened back in 2011) as just the second UK property under the brand.
Commenting on the news George Fleck, vice president and global brand leader, W Hotels, said:
“The unveiling of W Edinburgh not only signifies our exciting entry into Scotland, but it also proudly marks our second property and continued expansion in the United Kingdom.
“Our bold approach to luxury hospitality, complemented by culture-driven programming, and cutting-edge design will surely infuse the city with a playful, yet refined ambiance. W Edinburgh invites locals and global travellers alike to explore the city through the brand’s distinct lens.”
