*****UPDATE: Ennismore has now confirmed plans for Mama Shelter Liverpool, with an expected opening date of 2025.*****

Plans have been submitted to transform Liverpool’s historic George Henry Lee building into a Mama Shelter hotel.

Located on the corner of Basnett Street and Houghton Street, the building dates back to the mid 1800s, and in recent times served as a John Lewis department store until 2008.

According to the Liverpool Echo, plans had previously been approved for the development of a hotel on the site back in 2019, but this expired due to the pandemic and plans have now been submitted by new owner Landlab Developments.

The proposal calls for a 175-room Mama Shelter hotel. The Liverpool Echo also report that there are plans for a sports bar, karaoke booths, cinema screens and a fitness centre, although it’s unclear if some or all of these would form part of the hotel.

The Mama Shelter brand was founded in 2008 by the Trigano family and designer Philippe Starck.

Accor purchased a stake in Mama Shelter in 2014, and the brand now sits under the Ennismore lifestyle group in which Accor owns a majority stake.

Mama Shelter currently has 18 properties in locations including Lille, LA, Paris, Prague and Rio, as well as the first Mama Shelter in the UK capital which opened in 2019.

Forthcoming destinations include Dubai, Nice, Medellin, Zurich, Casablanca, Singapore and Los Angeles.
