Alaska Airlines has ordered a total of 50 B737-900 and B737 MAX aircraft, making it the largest purchase in the airline’s history.
The deal includes firm orders for 20 B737 MAX 8 aircraft, 17 B737 MAX 9s, and 13 B737-900ERs, with a total list price of over US$5 billion.
The carrier currently operates 120 aircraft, all of them variants of the Boeing B737 family, and is the seventh largest US airline by passenger traffic.
Boeing confirmed launch plans for the B737 MAX last year (see online news August 30, 2011), with US low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines set to be the launch customer (see online news December 13, 2011). Other customers include United, Norwegian and Lion Air.
