Delta has unveiled images of prototype uniforms which are currently under development.
The carrier has been working on the new uniform collection for around a year and a half, in partnership with GPS Apparel by Gap Inc – a division of the clothing retailer which focuses on uniform design.
Delta said that Gap had collected feedback from more than 20,000 employees on future uniform designs through job shadows, focus groups, surveys and interviews, to enable it to create prototypes that are “comfortable yet elevated, modern yet durable, and above all, functional”.
The carrier said that the prototypes are “anchored in deep navy blues and rich burgundy, with accents of bright red and white – a return to a more classic colour palette inspired by Delta’s brand identity and heritage”.
The designs also incorporate the Delta “widget” – the triangular shaped icon which was first introduced in 1959 and features on the tailfins of Delta aircraft.
Readers hoping to see Delta employees in the new uniforms may have to wait a while though. The carrier said that it will begin “extensive wear testing for each uniform garment” this autumn, adding that “The roll-in of new uniform pieces across all workgroups is not expected for the next few years”.
Delta current uniforms date back to 2018, with the collection created in partnership with New York-based designer Zac Posen.
Commenting on the news Ranjan Goswami, SVP of customer experience design, said:
“Delta has tens of thousands of uniformed employees, all with different needs and preferences. That means any evolution of the uniform programme will take time and deliberation to get right.
“We are committed to using this time to listen, learn and iterate as we work toward a new look – one that reflects and celebrates who we are as Delta.”
