Finnair has officially adopted Avios as the currency of its Finnair Plus loyalty programme.

The airline announced plans to use Avios as its Finnair Plus currency last summer, and in December confirmed it would adopt the currency from March 2024.

The flag carrier joins oneworld partners British Airways, Iberia and Qatar Airways in using Avios as the currency for their frequent flyer programmes.

Finnair said that the four million plus members of its loyalty programme would be able to transfer Avios between Finnair Plus and British Airway’s Executive Club accounts “from later this spring”.

The change also sees Finnair adopt a spend-based model for the earning of Avios, similar to that already in place for the Iberia Plus and British Airways Executive Club programmes.

One benefit of joining the Avios ecosystem is that members will see the availability of award seats increase.

There will be a guaranteed four economy seats and two business class seats (where available) on flights within Europe, and a minimum of four economy, two premium economy (where available) and two business class seats on flights between Europe and Asia, North America and Dubai.

And new milestone benefits are also being introduced, to reward members “within tiers”. For example Finnair Plus Silver members will receive two lounges passes when they earn 20,000 tier points.

Commenting on the news Ole Orvér, Finnair’s chief commercial officer, said:

“Adopting Avios as our new loyalty currency will bring great new benefits to our four million Finnair Plus members worldwide.

“We are always looking for new ways to enhance the customer proposition to earn the loyalty of Finnair’s most loyal customers and know this landmark change will open the door to even more opportunities.”
