Marriott has unveiled the new ‘European Spirit’ design for its select service Courtyard brand, following the renovation of its Berlin City Center property.

The hotel has been reimagined by Swedish interior design group Living Design Sweden, with the use of marble, oak and brass in the lobby area, alongside check-in pedestals and armchairs upholstered in cognac brown leather and classic tweeds, and the brand’s signature retail concept The Market.

There is also a communal table for guests to interact or work at, and Media Pods offering semi-private workspaces.

All of the hotel’s rooms, studios and one-bedroom apartments have been redesigned, with wall prints featuring illustrations of the Berlin skyline, platform beds, flooring featuring a soundproof layer of coconut fibres, an oak desk with hybrid lounge seating, a luggage bench, USB charging points and a 55-inch TV.

The hotel’s fitness centre has also been upgraded, with new Technogym equipment, a weightlifting area, and a hydration station for guests to rest and refuel.

Five additional European hotels are set to feature the new design by next year, with openings in Biel/Bienne in Switzerland, Yerevan in Armenia, Lyon in France, and Milan Linate and Turin in Italy.

Courtyard by Marriott is the group’s largest brand with over 1,200 properties worldwide, including recent UK openings close to Exeter’s Sandy Park conference centre and London City airport.

In 2021 Marriott unveiled plans to renovate more than 375 of its earliest generation Courtyard hotels in the US and Canada.

Marriott unveils Courtyard modernisation programme

Commenting on the news Sandra Schulze-Potgieter, vice president, premium and select brands, Europe, Middle East and Africa, said:

“The unveiling of Courtyard by Marriott’s new vision at Courtyard Berlin City Center demonstrates how our legacy brand continues to evolve to meet our guests and our member’s needs. By 2024, we plan to have five hotel openings that showcase the new design.

“The refreshed design standards show our commitment to ensure we create a contemporary, design-driven space for both leisure and business guests to connect, socialise and make the most of their stay, while also capturing the essence of each destination.”
