Marriott International has opened a property under its lifestyle Moxy brand in Britain’s Ocean City.
The 200-room Moxy Plymouth is situated on Millbay Boulevard, a project which has transformed the former Bath Road adjacent to the Plymouth Pavilions entertainment venue into a wider boulevard linking the city centre and waterfront area.
The new-build hotel is a big deal for Plymouth, which despites its status as the second largest city in South West England has had few new hotel openings in recent years, with a notable exception being the Crowne Plaza Plymouth – a rebranding of a former Holiday Inn property following refurbishment in 2018.
Interior design has been inspired by the city’s maritime history, with a nautical-themed lobby, lighting using fishing nets, and murals depicting ships and Plymouth’s iconic Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse.
Rooms feature a “smart-work area”, walk-in showers, leather headboards and 42-inch Chromecast TVs, while other facilities include a fitness centre, and combined bar and check-in area where guests receive a complimentary cocktail or mocktail on arrival.
Marriott launched the Moxy brand in 2013, with the first hotel opening in Milan the following year.
Moxy Plymouth is the brand’s 15th property in the UK and second in South West England, joining Moxy Bristol which opened in May 2022.
Commenting on the news Wayne Androliakos, regional director for UK Operations for Hotel Co 51, which manages the property, said:
“We’re extremely proud to be part of the Millbay regeneration project. Our partners Vastint were one of the first major investors to put make their mark by building a hotel here and together we could see the potential that the site would bring.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to bring our playful hotel, showcasing this fantastic, growing independent quarter.”
Last year plans were announced for the first Hilton property in Plymouth, with the 150-room Hilton Garden Inn Plymouth set to occupy a site overlooking Plymouth Hoe, close to the city’s Royal Citadel and Smeaton’s Tower.
