Marriott’s fast-growing Autograph Collection has debuted in Athens with the opening of a 60-room property.
Academia of Athens has a restaurant, bar, spa and pool, with design features taking inspiration from Greek philosophers.
A marble backdrop behind the lobby quotes Socrates, reading: “I am not Athenian or Greek, but a citizen of the world”.
Rooms and suites have custom desks, brass light fixtures and tufted upholstered furniture evoking the feeling of a library.
The rooftop Aether Restaurant Bar overlooks the Acropolis and offers a bookshelf-inspired bar, banquette sofas, day beds and a telescope.
The all-day Plato Lounge Bar will serve cocktails using Greek herbs and fruits.
Meanwhile Symposium Restaurant will serve a range of dishes using Greek ingredients.
Once a week the hotel will host “Dialogue Soirees” aimed at getting guests to spark conversation.
Marriott is adding 12 European properties to its upmarket Autograph Collection this year, including the Shelbourne in Dublin and the Hotel Banke in Paris.
Other additions include Aegon Mykonos, Hotel Universo in the Italian city Lucca, Sapphire House in Antwerp, Hotel Querencia de Seville, La Caserne Chanzy in Reims, northeast France, Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic in Montreux, Switzerland, Bernini Rome and The Burdock in Istanbul.
We recently reviewed two new Autograph Collection properties in London – Bankside and The Dixon.
Six US properties will also join the brand this month.
