Today’s very long-haul flights can mean aircraft can encounter a technical issue in a remote region.

That was certainly the case with Air India last year when its 777 flight encountered a technical issue and landed in a remote town in Russia. Passengers found themselves staying overnight in a local school.

Now it’s reported that an Air France 777 flying Osaka-Paris (it took the southern route rather than, normally, the Polar route used for Japan-Europe) had to land in Baku.

Owing to visa difficulties the passengers remained airside throughout the night.
