New Zealand will get its second hotel from Intercontinental Hotels Group’s (IHG) flagship brand with the opening of the Intercontinental Auckland in 2022.

Intercontinental Hotel Group’s (IHG) flagship brand is heading to Auckland in 2022 with the opening of the Intercontinental Auckland, the brand’s second property in New Zealand.

The property will form part of the NZ$1 billion (US$658 million) Commercial Bay mixed-use district, occupying a waterfront location at 1 Queen Street. The development also includes a 39-storey office tower and what is expected to be the “largest concentration of high-quality retail facilities” in Auckland.

The new Intercontinental will have 244 rooms with 90 per cent offering views over the water. All-day dining and bars, along with the brand’s signature Club Intercontinental experience, a gym, and meeting facilities will also be available.

“It’s high time Auckland got a taste of the Intercontinental Life, so we are very excited about this announcement,” said Abhijay Sandilya, IHG’s senior director of development for Australasia.

“Being part of such an iconic mixed-use development ensures the hotel, dining, retail and commercial components form a symbiotic relationship.”

The new hotel will also be located close to the New Zealand International Convention Centre and Sky City, and is situated 20 kilometres from Auckland Airport.

IHG currently has 48 hotels operating under four brands in Australasia, including one other property under the group’s flagship brand, the Intercontinental Wellington. A further 22 properties are currently in the pipeline.
