Lufthansa will serve the Iraqi capital four times per week from the end of September, with Boeing 737 operated on the german carrier’s behalf by Swiss company Privatair.

Lufthansa announced schedules for its flights between Frankfurt and Erbil in March (see online news March 25), and at the time said it was “making the necessary preparations” for the launch of flights to Baghdad.

This route has now been confirmed, with flights departing Munich at 0855 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, arriving in Baghdad at 1415. The return leg will leave the Iraqi capital at 1545, landing back in Germany at 1935. The Privatair Boeing 737 will be configured for 108 seats, with 84 in economy and 24 in business.

Other carriers to recently announce routes to Iraq include Emirates (see online news May 10), Etihad (see online news April 19), Viking Hellas (see online news February 19), and Gulf Air (see online news September 9, 2009).

However the Iraqi Airways route between London and Baghdad, which relaunched last month, has ceased as the airline has been dissolved by Iraq’s government (see online news May 26).
