Gulf Air confirms Iraq expansion

2 Sep 2009 by Mark Caswell

Gulf Air’s CEO Samer Majali has confirmed that the carrier is to expand its operations in Iraq to a total of five destinations, adding Basra and Solamnia to the previously announced routes to Baghdad, Najaf and Erbil.

Gulf Air recommenced flights to Baghdad this week, and speaking on arrival in the Iraqi capital Majali said:

“This is a great milestone for a new, forward-looking Gulf Air. We were the first and only full-service GCC carrier to operate into Baghdad back in 1976 and today we reaffirm that leadership position.

“I am pleased to announce to you here today in Iraq of our plans to extend our network into the country even further. My plan is that we will soon operate to a total of five destinations in Iraq: Baghdad; Najaf; Erbil; Basra and Solamnia.”

Gulf Air says that forward bookings for the Bahrain-Baghdad service are looking “very favourable”. Iraqi Airways is also due to be commencing flights from London to Baghdad in the near future, although no launch date has yet been confirmed.
