Iraq’s government has dissolved the state-owned carrier Iraqi Airways, according to a report by the Associated Press (AP). The news comes just weeks after the airline restarted flights between London and Baghdad.
AP reports today (May 26) that the airline has been disolved due to a $1.2bn financial dispute revolving around the alleged theft of aircraft and spare parts from Kuwait furing the Iraqi invasion.
The report quotes Karim al-Tamimi, a spokesperson for Iraq’s Transport Ministry, who said that he hoped to replace the airline with “two or three companies to resume its operations” in the future.
Iraqi Airways relaunched flights between Baghdad and London in April (see online news April 24), but reports suggest the route was cancelled when the aircraft was impounded.
At the time of writing the carrier’s website (iraqiairways.co.uk) made no mention of the latest developments.
