Best described as a modern British tavern, The Wigmore, tucked away at one end of Regent Street. Renowned chef Michel Roux Jr. has conceived the menu, while the cocktails and wine list have been curated by the dynamic team at Artesian, the cocktail bar at The Langham. What first strikes you about The Wigmore is its gorgeous decor and cavernous space — in fact, it once housed a bank and enjoyed a glorious transformation thanks to Martin Brudnizki Design Studio. If you’re not trying one of the bartender’s signature cocktails, try out the house brew, Saison, brewed in collaboration with Bermondsey’s “Brew by Numbers”. The list of beers and wines is endless, but it is the food menu that actually impresses. We started with The Wigmore’s fat chips topped with Bloody Mary salt (don’t forget to help yourself to a sachet or two of this salt, at the exit) followed by a series of mains. This ranged from steamed sea bream in a pesto broth to a leek and Ticklemore cheese quiche served with salad. The highlight was The Wigmore’s popular chicken tikka pie, served with a generous portion of Bombay potatoes. The dessert selection is quintessentially British with goodies like raspberry custard tart, a summer berry sorbet or a platter of British raw milk cheeses.

Verdict: For a wholesome, hearty British meal, with and a few pints of local beer, The Wigmore is just the place for you. Riaan Jacob George
