Background

This hotel is particularly iconic in Tokyo’s hospitality space as it was the first skyscraper hotel to be built in Japan, back in 1971. Even today, Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo is considered to be the ultimate business hotel in the Japanese capital, as well as a major MICE venue. The group also has hotels in the Japanese cities of Sapporo, Tama and Hachioji.

What’s it like?

On entering the lobby, I absolutely loved the energy all around. The hotel’s public spaces are buzzing with tourists, families, business and MICE travellers, lending a nice convivial ambience to the space. The décor is breathtaking and has evident elements of Japanese culture.

Where is it?

The property enjoys a beautiful location, within easy reach of Tokyo’s main commercial and tourist hubs, and is close to the Shinjuku station, a major city hub. There are several public transport stations within walking distance from the hotel, and this makes getting around very easy.

Rooms

The hotel is massive and boasts a room inventory of over 1,000 rooms and suites that are spread across different categories. Following several refurbishments the rooms now wear a fresher, more modern look and are packed with a host of amenities. I stayed in a Standard room, with a breathtaking view of Shinjuku. The room was elegant, understated and extremely functional, with perks like plush linen, a gorgeous bathroom and premium quality amenities. Interesting to note, also, that the hotel has a host of special access rooms for differently-abled guests, and these rooms have also been recently renovated.

Food and drink

As a guest at Keio Plaza Hotel, you are spoilt for choice with F&B as the hotel boasts several food outlets and bars across its premises. You can choose from different styles of specialised Japanese cuisine such as tempura and teppanyaki, as well as international cuisines like Italian, Chinese and Korean. For your evening tipple, head to the chic sake bar, the trendy Aurora Sky Lounge or the aptly named Duet Art Lounge, with an impressive wine list.

Meetings

The hotel is one of Tokyo’s premium MICE destinations. It plays host to all sorts of international conferences and exhibitions as well. It boasts different banquet rooms, which can be modified depending on the size of the event. For the wedding market too, this is an important hub and it has three wedding chapels, perfect for wedding shoots  and ceremonies.

Leisure

After a long day at work, head to the hotel’s gorgeous outdoor pool, located on the seventh floor of the  building. There is also an impressive fitness centre, with some great equipment. The hotel also has a convenience store, a food boutique and a salon.

Verdict: A great business hotel in Tokyo, especially if you want to host or attend a MICE event.
