This could give an idea of BA’s schedule going forward. Just a couple points – 1) it has NOT been published by BA. It has been published by a site called routesonline.com which I guess gets their data from the airline Computer Reservations Systems (CRS). 2) I wouldn’t read too much into aircraft types displayed. Some aircraft types on this list appear on ba.com but differ on my own roster. I would say BA have yet to update aircraft types in the CRS. 3) things will remain very fluid and change day by day based on government lockdowns etc. For example, Singapores decision yesterday to close SIN to transit traffic may impact the SIN/SYD flight. HKG has just announced it is closed to all foreigners and that could impact the daily flight.

Interesting to see PVG and PEK back on the list with three and four weekly flights respectively planned from May.

A question, rferguson…. How does BA deal with the fact that, to operate (for example) the Accra flight, the crew usually overnight at a hotel in Accra. No doubt it is the same for all longhaul flights. Are aircrew exempt from the ban on non-residents being allowed to enter a country? Or are there changes to the work patterns? (e.g. crew are brought back on the inward flight?)

It’s a mixture currently. For the shorter longhaul flights there is a dispensation available that allows BA to operate the flights with two crews. One will rest on the outbound (First Class blocked off) whilst the other operates. When they arrive in say ABV/ACC/LOS they will swap over and the crew that operated out will rest on the return.

Longer long haul flights there is generally a dispensation by the health authorities for the crew to slip. These however are quite strict. DXB, SIN, SEZ, South Africa require all crew to remain in their own hotel rooms the ENTIRE duration of the trip currently. Grim! DXB has even gone further – it tests all incoming crew for COVID-19.

Willie Walsh gave an interview to CNN yesterday afternoon. He stated…”well we’re planning on an effective shutdown for a couple of months with a very gradual build up after that”.

Although still no official release. ‘Effective shutdown’ could be interpreted in a number of ways I guess. Complete and utter grounding after the repatriation flights. Maintain cargo flights only. Maintain cargo and service to the few US ‘gateway’ destinations only.

Seeing the pictures of all the parked up aircraft, my curiosity has got the better of me.

What actually happens to the aircraft both in their ‘lock down’ and on an ongoing basis. These are not ‘graveyard’ assets, but multi million pound complex pieces of engineering equipment, that require constant engineering inspections.

How long can you simply park up and walk away from so many aircraft and when the times comes to start moving, is it simply a standard pre flight inspection.

    Interested to hear the answers.

I know pilots/cabin crew may need some back to work training after 90 days or so inactivity… but what about the aircraft themselves??

Martyn Sinclair- others on here will know far more than me but my understanding is that there is a very strict maintenance regime for aircraft which are parked up like this which has to be adhered to or the plane will effectively be unflyable. It’s not like a car which you can leave for a few weeks with no great issue other than a flat battery.

    🙁

    Dear Mr Sinclair,

For only the second time in our 100-year history, (the first being during the Second World War), the majority of our British Airways aircraft have now touched down in London, leaving just a small fleet flying to bring people home to their loved ones and to deliver critical supplies to countries and people in need.

As borders continue to close and the world comes to a temporary standstill, we wanted to extend our heartfelt thanks to you for your incredible support of British Airways and our crews, and to send our warmest thoughts to you and to those who may be suffering at the hands of this unexpected crisis.

As difficult as it has been for our teams and our customers, we stand together. Our business stands on strong foundations. At its heart are many thousands of colleagues who care passionately about the airline, Britain and the nations and customers we serve.

An incredible new global community has emerged from the situation we find ourselves in and that is something for us all to feel proud of. Hundreds of thousands of people have volunteered their services to help organisations around the world, so too have many of our own people, and for that we are proud and grateful. While many of our aircraft remain on the ground, we will take inspiration from the heroes who are working on the front line and we will continue to serve Britain as best we can.

Sadly, we know that now is not the time to travel. We don’t know when it will be, but we do know that when our aircraft are cleared for take-off once again, it will be epic. Families will be reunited, the wheels of industry will start turning again and when they do, we’ll be ready, to fly and to serve.

Until then, from our family to yours, thank you and we wish you well.

    Thank you,

    Alex Cruz
    Chairman and CEO, British Airways

I’m very disappointed that we haven’t received our personal letters of thanks, but perhaps that is because of the Ghanaian postal service. Although I am sure Mr Cruz would have sent them by recorded delivery so, no doubt, they will arrive soon. Anyway, it is heartwarming to know that Mr Cruz’s family is thinking about us.

Just a word of caution – in may ‘epics’ the ‘heroes’ end up descending into the inferno.

I am clearly not on Sr. Cruz’s Christmas list as he didn’t write to me. I’m just a humble Exec Club Blue, but my wife is a higher level (OW Emerald I think) than I am and she is also waiting for his letter.

“Dear Mr Sinclair, For only the second time in our 100-year history…..”

Martyn, is that real?? On careful reading, to be honest parts of the BA letter from Cruz look like satire or parody to me. (Not quite up to ‘Private Eye’ standards, but not bad).
