Hyatt has added the second Spanish property and just the fifth in Europe under its Grand Hyatt brand.

Grand Hyatt Barcelona is located on Plaça de Piu XII on the city’s famous Avenida Diagonal, and features 465 rooms including 49 suites.

If this sounds familiar it’s because the existing property was previously trading under Hyatt’s Unbound Collection.

The hotel originally opened in 1975 as Hotel Princesa Sofia, before becoming an InterContinental property in the 1990s.

As previously reported the hotel was fully renovated in 2017, and was reflagged as Hotel Sofia Barcelona – Unbound Collection by Hyatt at the start of 2019.

Facilities include Art Deco-inspired rooms, the 19th floor Peruvian restaurant Maymanta, Sofia Bar & Tapas, and Philosophia coffee shop. A new steakhouse restaurant Lena is also set to open later this year under award-winning chef Dani Garcia.

The hotel also features indoor and outdoor pools, and a spa with steam room and sauna, as well as 22 meeting rooms including an 864 sqm space for large events.

Commenting on the news Javier Águila, group president, EAME, Hyatt said:

“Grand Hyatt Barcelona celebrates Hyatt’s dedication to unparalleled luxury and exceptional experiences. An iconic and emblematic landmark in Barcelona, the hotel embraces the lavish style of the Grand Hyatt brand, coupled with a captivating experience.

“As the second Grand Hyatt property in Spain, today’s opening reflects our accelerated brand growth in Spain and more broadly in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and showcases our continued commitment to delivering world-class hospitality.”

Earlier this year Meliá Hotels International added the first Barcelona property under its luxury Gran Melia brand, with the renovation and rebranding of the city’s former Rey Juan Carlos I hotel.
