Hilton has announced plans to open its first hotel in the west African country of Ghana.

The new-build Hilton Accra Cantonments is scheduled to open in December this year, and will feature 145 rooms, as well as an outdoor swimming pool, fitness centre, spa, all day dining restaurant and 900sqm of events space.

The hotel will be situated in Accra’s upscale Cantonments suburb, within walking distance of the city’s US and French embassies, and around 5km from Kotoka International airport

Hilton currently operates 43 hotels across Africa, with another 65 under development, including Hilton Garden Inn Accra Liberation Road.

Last month British Airways announced plans to launch flights between Gatwick and Accra this winter, complementing the carrier’s existing daily Heathrow-Accra service.

Commenting on the news Carlos Khneisser, vice president, development, Middle East and Africa, Hilton, said:

“With the signing of Hilton Accra Cantonments, we are delighted to be growing our pipeline in Ghana and adding momentum to our plans to more than double our portfolio in Africa in the coming years.

“The opening of the hotel later this year will mark our entry into Ghana – one of the world’s largest producers of gold and cocoa, and a burgeoning tourist destination. We look forward to this exciting milestone which will highlight our continued expansion in Africa.”
