*****UPDATE: British Airways has now added new sign-up offers on its website, which are significantly more generous than those being offered directly through American Express.

Until February 21 new cardmembers can earn 20,000 Avios when applying for the free British Airways American Express Credit Card, and 70,000 Avios when applying for the British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card.*****

American Express has launched an offer for new and existing British Airways American Express Premium Plus cardmembers.

New cardmembers that sign up for the card by February 21, 2023 can collect up to 35,000 bonus Avios (rather than 25,000) when they spend £3,000 in the first three months of card membership.

Amex says this could equal an off-peak business class (Club Europe) return flight from London to destinations including Amsterdam, Geneva and Milan (plus the £1 to cover taxes, fees and carrier charges).

Existing cardmembers can also collect extra Avios for a limited time when they refer a friend. The offer allows them to earn 12,000 Avios, rather than the original 9,000, when the referred friend is approved.

Referred friends, meanwhile, could collect 36,000 bonus Avios (rather than 26,000) and spend £3,000 in the first three months.

Maggie Boyle, VP American Express, commented:

“This limited time offer provides new and existing British Airways American Express Premium Plus Cardmembers with an opportunity to kick start the New Year with increased Avios as they plan their 2023 travels. This is particularly timely, as research from Amex shows that more than two fifths (41%) of Brits say they will collect points or cashback when they book their 2023 travels by spending on a Card that earns them rewards, and a further three in ten (30%) say they will use points or vouchers to save money on their holidays.”

British Airways American Express Premium Plus Cardmembers gain 1.5 Avios for every £1 they spend, while purchases made with BA or British Airways Holidays can earn cardmembers three Avios for every £1 spent.

Cardmembers can also redeem Companion Vouchers if they spend £10,000 within their membership year. As of June 2022, solo travellers can now redeem these vouchers for a 50 per cent discount on the Avios cost of a booking for a single passenger.

The change means that customers now have the additional flexibility of travelling alone or with a companion, and receiving benefits along the way.

Recent changes in December 2022 also mean that cardmembers can use Companion Vouchers on Aer Lingus and Iberia flights in addition to British Airways.
