IHG Hotels and Resorts has announced plans for new-build Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn Express hotels close to Stockholm Arlanda airport.

The dual-branded property is expected to open in 2026, and will be situated close to both the Swedish capital’s primary airport, and the Scandinavian XPO conference and events centre.

The Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn Express Stockholm Arlanda Airport development will offer a total of 420 rooms – 120 at the Crowne Plaza and a further 300 at the Holiday Inn Express.

Facilities will include a fitness centre, restaurant and bar, and “a full-service conference centre”.

IHG notes that the development “marks the return of IHG to the Swedish market” – Business Traveller requested more information on this, and was told that the group “previously had the Intercontinental Grand Hotel Stockholm in its portfolio from 2008 until 2011”.

IHG currently operates eight hotels across the Nordics, with Six Senses properties also under development in Iceland and Norway.

Commenting on the news Miguel Martins, head of development Northern Europe at IHG Hotels and Resorts, said:

“As a market with a predominately leased deal structure and dominated by domestic brands, Sweden – like most Scandinavian countries – has traditionally been challenging to conquer for hotel companies with a franchise-based business model.

“We are therefore very excited to be entering Sweden with this diverse dual-branded property which is a fantastic representation of both our premium and essentials brand portfolio.”
