IHG Hotels and Resorts has unveiled 11 new signings across the Iberian Peninsula, including the first Staybridge Suites property in Portugal.

The signings are in addition to the recent agreement with JJW Hotels and Resorts to add the Penina Hotel and Golf Resort, and Dona Filipa Hotel – both situated in Portugal’s Algarve region – to its newly launched Vignette Collection.

Portugal’s second Six Senses property is scheduled to open in Lisbon in 2025 within the city’s 18th century Palacio de Pedrosas, and will offer 114 rooms and “first-class wellness facilities”. The hotel will join the existing Six Senses Douro Valley in Lamego.

There are three signings for IHG’s extended stay Staybridge Suites brand, including the 105-suite Staybridge Suites Malaga, the 135-room Staybridge Suites Carcavelos, and the 119-suite Staybridge Suites Porto.

IHG will also add five hotels under its Holiday Inn Express brand, including the 156-room Holiday Inn Express Madrid Airport (slated for June 2023), a 105-room hotel in Bilbao (August 2023), the 146-room Holiday Inn Express Seville (the group’s first property in the city, slated for November 2023), a 96-room hotel in Porto’s Boa Vista neighbourhood, and a 76-room property located in Evora, 90 minutes from Lisbon.

A 120-room Hotel Indigo property is also under development in Gibraltar, and the 208-room Holiday Inn Sant Cugat is set to open this June on the outskirts of Barcelona.

Commenting on the news Willemijn Geels, VP Development, Europe at IHG Hotels and Resorts, said:

“I am delighted to be announcing such a strong selection of signings across Iberia which is a stunning region with so much to offer all types of travellers.

“With Iberia being a key growth market for us, we are also excited to have appointed Javier de Villanueva Baygual as Development Director, Spain and Portugal. Javier brings extensive corporate and hospitality experience and will be based in-market and drive our continued investment and dedication into growing this market for IHG.

“Responsible growth remains a key priority for us in Europe in 2022, and this incredible selection of Iberian signings, in addition to Javier’s appointment, are a perfect start to the year.”
