Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the governing civic body of Mumbai, Maharashtra will allow international flight passengers without a negative Covid-19 report to go home after swab collection, according to The Times of India report.

The passengers will be notified about their test report over the phone.

At present, the rule is being practiced for domestic passengers, coming from Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Goa.

The move aims to reduce crowding at the airport as passengers have to wait for hours to get their Covid report.

Currently, only international passengers arriving in Mumbai with Covid-19 negative reports are allowed to go home. But those landing without a report are taken to the testing centre within the airport premises. After the swab collection, passengers need to wait in the airport holding area until their results are out which takes almost eight hours.

The new rule is expected to provide relief for passengers. If the report comes positive, BMC will communicate with the concerned person for further procedures and if it is negative, the passenger will be directly informed about it by the lab.
