Marriott has opened the tenth UK property under its Moxy Hotels brand in Chester amid the nationwide lockdown, with rooms currently available to key workers and business travellers.

The 194-room hotel is located a five-minute walk from the city centre and train station. Interiors play on the hotel’s proximity to the racecourse, with a steel horse installation in the lobby area, a series of racing-themed murals on display, and an installation of Chester’s prominent Shot Tower landmark near the lobby.

The lobby also has a video wall and 24-hour bar, which doubles as the check-in location and serves food, wines by the glass and local brews.

Rooms include large flatscreen TV’s, built-in USB ports and complimentary wifi. The hotel also has 24 car parking spaces.

Commenting on the opening of the hotel, general manager Trevor Roberts said:

“I love a challenge and there’s no better challenge than to open a sizeable new hotel during these unprecedented times.  We have worked hard to ensure all our Covid-19 safety procedures are in place for guests and staff and we are already gaining traction with bookings and are making plans for Christmas.”

Donovan Sumner, Regional Director of Operations for UK and Italy for Hotel Co 51 (the operating company for Moxy Chester), added:

“This is Moxy’s 10th UK opening and it’s great to bring our innovative and unique style to this fabulous Roman city. Trevor’s experience means he is well placed to head up this operation and we’re proud to be creating jobs at this unbelievable time for the hospitality industry.”

Sumner also confirmed that there are plans to open a Courtyard by Marriott property in the city “in the near future”.

Marriott launched the Moxy brand in 2013, with the first hotel opening in Milan the following year.

The brand currently has around 70 properties across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific, with recent openings including a Southampton property by the West Quay Shopping Centre near the city’s marina, and the first Moxy hotel in Taiwan.

The brand is also set to debut in the Middle East in 2025, with a 320-room property in Dubai.
