Stansted airport has opened the first phase of a new check-in area, adding eight “hi-tech” desks at the terminal.
The new desks are the first of eight that will be added this year to handle growing passenger numbers.
The work is part of a £600 million transformation project which will also include upgrades to the airfield and car parks, as well as the addition of new upper deck seating areas in the departure lounge.
The airport also plans to move to a ‘Shoreline’ check-in layout “over the coming years”, with desks stretching across the whole terminal, which it says will give passengers “a more intuitive and easier journey through the airport and provide flexibility to allow us to accommodate new airlines as we grow as an airport”.
Last year Stansted received planning permission for a new £130 million, 34,000sqm arrivals building, which will eventually allow the existing terminal to be reconfigured for departing passengers only.
