Manchester airport has announced a ten-year, £1 billion investment programme that will double its capacity.
The decade-long renovation will see 60 enhancements including the expansion of Terminal 2 to become the airport's primary terminal; improvements to Terminal 3; and larger airside transfer facilities, including a direct linkage between T2 and T3.
Elsewhere, the "Manchester Airport Transformation Programme" will result in a US pre-clearance facility (see news, June 2); a new and enlarged security hall; self-service check-in kiosks; new food and retail outlets; and improved departure gate facilities.
The works at the UK's third largest airport will be phased "to ensure minimal disruption to airport operations, passengers and airlines".
Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said: "Today's announcement of £1 billion of private sector investment in Manchester airport is a massive vote of confidence in the north of England and in our plan to build a 'Northern Powerhouse'.
"The investment, which will completely transform Manchester airport and double its capacity, will help ensure that it continues to compete with global airports across the world."
