Fraport Visitor Centre - Airport City Model

What is it?

Frankfurt airport’s operator, Fraport, has created an immersive 1,200 sqm centre to learn all about the behind-the-scenes operations of one of Europe’s busiest airports.

The €5.7 million centre opened in August 2021 following two years of construction.

Where is it?

In Terminal 1, departures, hall C and next to Gate C1. You must book in advance to visit.

What can you do?

The whole experience is very interactive, with around 30 multimedia exhibits, virtual reality games and augmented reality applications – plus floor-to-ceiling windows offering a view of the tarmac.

Guests can learn about the day-to-day operations as well as the airport’s history and future, with information regarding the construction of terminal 3 which is set to complete by 2026.

There are very knowledgeable guides that walk you through the various activities and can answer questions regarding the airport.

As you enter there is a huge 55 sqm model of the airport which has an interactive element. Tablets are provided for visitors to scan the model and bring up information about each of the 80 airport facilities, along with photographs and videos.

Fraport Visitor Centre - The Globe

At the back of the room is a 25 sqm LCD wall known as ‘The Globe’. The screen, which is made up of 28 individual displays, shows real-time global air traffic so you can see thousands of flight movements on one wall and appreciate the complexity of international air traffic.

For those that prefer an adventure, guests can experience the rollercoaster-like journey of a check-in bag at the airport with the help of a VR headset and synchronised motion seats.

Alternatively, you can become a marshal and direct an A320 neo aircraft to its parking position in an interactive game, holding lightsaber-like guiders.
