First look: Sheraton Zhuhai Hotel

23 Mar 2015 by Clement Huang
As the first international five-star property in Zhuhai, the new Sheraton hotel has a lot to prove. The soon-to-be opened 548-room property was developed by State-owned enterprise Huafa Group, which has invested heavily in establishing Zhuhai as an attractive destination for business. Sheraton Zhuhai Hotel is part of a mixed-use development that also includes a St. Regis hotel (opening on June 30, 2016), a serviced apartment property, and the Zhuhai International Convention & Exhibition Centre. It is located along the waterfront in the Shizimen District – projected to be Zhuhai’s new central business district. Business Traveller Asia-Pacific had the opportunity to gain an exclusive first look at the hotel. Lobby Upon walking through the doors of Sheraton Zhuhai Hotel, guests are greeted by a life-size Chinese pavilion that dominates the lobby. Developed as a unique Lobby Lounge area, this impressive structure is made from black Indonesian-imported wood and will host the "Sheraton Social Hour", an initiative where guests can try fine wines and socialise with the mystical sounds of the guzheng (traditional Chinese string instrument) playing behind them. Guzheng Aside for the Chinese pavilion structure, the lobby design features a blend of both contemporary and traditional elements. Huge lantern-like lights and koi ponds complement the brushed metal plating and marble flooring. This design philosophy continues through the entire property. The hallways leading to the guestrooms feature oriental wall panels accentuated by Chinese artwork, while the use of varnished marble helps deliver a modern western touch to the overall look. Guestrooms feature contemporary and oriental touches During our visit to the hotel, we were provided accommodation at the standard room, but also had the opportunity to check out one of the 78 suites. Business travellers will be pleased to know that all guestrooms will serve their needs well. With carefully allocated digital controls that are able to light up the room with a simple touch, comfortable work desks, universal power adaptors, and of course the brand’s signature Sweet Sleeper Bed, the hotel’s accommodations are business traveller-friendly in every way. Bathroom Other standard room amenities include a bathroom with separate bath and shower facilities, JBL speaker and docking station, 42-inch LCD television, bathrobes, and wifi. Internet access will cost RMB 80 (US$13) per day but members of the Starwood Preferred Guest programme can enjoy complimentary connectivity. In addition, guests staying on the executive floors on level 14 through 17 are afforded access to the Sheraton Club Lounge. Feast all-day dining restaurant Guests looking to grab a bite can look forward to five different dining venues. Along with the Lobby Lounge mentioned above, there is also Feast – a large all-day dining restaurant that features an open kitchen where customers can witness executive chef Ray and his team dish up a range of buffet and a la carte options. Yue dining table Yue private room Then there’s the classic Chinese restaurant Yue, which offers some of the most impressive private dining rooms that we have seen; and Someplace Else – an American-themed gastropub that serves up a range of comfort food and drinks. Finally, guests can also sip homemade mixes and fresh juices while relaxing along the sundeck at the Pool Bar. Outdoor swimming pool Recreational facilities include an indoor and outdoor pool, tennis court, and a fully equipped fitness aerobic room. There isn’t a spa available, but this isn’t surprising given Sheraton’s position as a business hotel. The St. Regis Zhuhai will however offer its signature Remede Spa concept when it opens next June. The oriental-style grand ballroom at Sheraton Zhuhai Hotel Finally, despite being located minutes from the Zhuhai International Convention & Exhibition Centre, Sheraton Zhuhai Hotel offers over 2,000sqm of flexible event spaces. With a total of 13 meeting rooms, the highlight has got to be the 1,000sqm grand ballroom that features a modern spin on oriental themes courtesy of the carpet artwork and crystal chandeliers. For those after a more classical European look for their events, the St. Regis Zhuhai’s 800sqm grand ballroom is now operational and available for booking. As Starwood properties, both hotels are serviced by the same staff. The classical look of the St. Regis Zhuhai grand ballroom Sheraton Zhuhai Hotel is expected to open its doors in May 2015. While online reservations are still not available, the hotel will offer a special opening rate for its launch. For more information, visit starwoodhotels.com Clement Huang
