Lufthansa installs more baggage drop-off machines

20 Jun 2013

Just ahead of the summer holiday season, Lufthansa has completed installing 39 baggage machines in three airports around the country, allowing passengers to drop off their luggage before moving on to security and immigration channels.

Passengers, who have already checked in online through a mobile device or check-in machine and received their boardng pass, can use the baggage machines within 23 hours before departure. This means they simply have to place the luggage on the belt and scan the boarding pass barcode on the machine. A self-adhesive luggage tag will be automatically printed and this customers can attach to the bags. The luggage will then be transported by the machine to the airport’s conveyor belts and a receipt will be printed out.

The new conveniences can be found at the following locations: at Frankfurt Terminal One, eight in departure hall A and eight in hall B; Munich Terminal Two departures level, 13 at the south and six at the north side entrances; Hamburg Terminal Two, four at the end of check-in rows seven and eight.

This service was pilot tested at Munich and Frankfurt airports last year and yielded positive feedback from customers.

Lufthansa isn't the only aircraft to introduce cutting edge airport technology; several others, such as Qantas and Air France-KLM, have stepped in to streamline airport procedures (see story here).
