Iberia to move to Heathrow T5

Iberia’s flights between Madrid and London Heathrow will arrive into and depart from Terminal 5 as of March 25, with the services being given a new BA flight number.

The carrier’s eight daily return flights from Madrid currently operate into and out of Heathrow Terminal 3, but from the end of next month Iberia will move into merger partner BA’s hub at Terminal 5.

A statement from Iberia said that “The move will substantially improve connections between both airlines’ flight networks”, adding that the minimum connection time for flights between the two carriers will drop from 90 minutes to 60 minutes following the switch.

The two carriers have also been co-located at Madrid Barajas airport’s Terminal 4 since 2006.

Following the switch over these flights will move to a BA flight number, but will continue to be operated by Iberia, with the Spanish carrier’s onboard services.

  • Can you clarify – the article is unclear. IB flights already have a BA flight number, so what is changing other than the flight number and the terminal? What about BA’s own flights to MAD? Are all BA flights to MAD now being operated to IB with IB onboard service (i.e. all flights are now codeshares, no free food/drink in Y, buy on board), or are some flights still being operated by BA and/or with BA onboard service (free drinks and snacks in Y)? What about other flights to/from Spain?

  • Terrible decision for passengers. The unique selling point of t5 was its exclusivity to BA. It felt different, it was different. Now it will be just another terminal and will be affected by the awful punctuality of IB and the need to provide “fair stand allocation” ( which really means prioritising IB over BA).

    Cannot think what BA are getting out of this……….it makes no sense after fighting for so long to have your own dedicated terminal…

  • As I understand it BA operated flights will use existing nos but IB operated flights will have a BA5*** number.

    Catering rules stay as is so IB Y fares will have BOB but BA Y fares will have a free drink/sback.

  • There isn’t even enough room for BA’s own services which still use other terminals as well. I recently waited 35 minutes for a stand on a shorthaul service, longer than the flight itself! To my mind it’s a daft decision.
