19 Apr 2011 by BusinessTraveller

German budget hotel chain Motel One has announced its first property in the UK, a 208-room hotel in the former buildings of Edinburgh City Council’s Economic Development department.

Located on Market Street in the Castlehill area of the city, the hotel will take up part of a 140,000 square foot mixed-use site, including residential space, offices and restaurants,

The £45 million development, which is set to take three years to complete, will be the fourth project in Edinburgh by property developer Chris Stewart, who is responsible for two properties on Waterloo place now occupied by Apex and Travelodge hotels, along with another project on Baxter’s Place.

Motel One has a total of 32 properties across Germany in cities including Berlin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Stuttgart, with another two under development in Austria.

The group describes itself as a “low budget design hotel chain”, with room prices from €49.
