Hi Swissdiver, what a small world! I’ll pass your regards on tomorrow as I have to speak to Michael. I’ve known him for about twenty years and he is a good friend of mine. Maybe see you one day at a great British breakfast or other event?

Apologies all for joining the thread late – I have, er, been travelling. But this time on holiday with the family and I don’t take the laptop on holiday ….

I am 54, and my business is an adviser to governments. Since governments tend to like you to travel to them rather than vice versa, I make about 40 trips a year (around 90-100 flights), with no very obvious pattern: First World and Third World, all the inhabited continents, rich and poor countries.

Since I start and end each trip in London I tend to fly BA more than most other airlines and have just completed 10 years as Exec Club gold: the quickest I have retained this level being about 3 months after the start of my “year”. I tend to fly business class when flying on business intercontinental, and first class when flying on my own money.

My biggest bugbear, as a regular traveller, is people who are not and have no clue how to use airports – getting in the way, slowing everyone up, and so on. Actually, that is grossly unfair and my real beef is with the airports themselves who do not make it easier – much much easier – for those who are lost, nervous or simply unfamiliar with the process.

And my biggest pleasure? It would be too corny to say “reading threads on this forum” – and also not true. I am not that sad. But I have found much to enjoy, much to amuse and much education over the years here. My thanks to all other posters.

This thread has not been deleted – just removing a lot of spam this morning which is causing the forums to jump around a little. Sorry for the disruption.

Hi im Mark, i have been working in marketing for a number of years now and you would be surprised at the amount of travelling that us guys get to do. Client meetings all over the UK mean that we get to visit some of the major cities, whilst conferences give us an excuse to travel and see towns and cities fairly often. As we have expanded we have gained more clients abroad and so we have been visiting more and more countries. We often use sites like http://www.incentivetravel.co/ to help find us find venues for both meeting and conferences abroad. Its something worth looking into as it gives you the excuse to go somewhere nice whilst working. We went to Malta recently and it was amazing!

    Missed this one, somehow.

Editor of a global food commodities weekly newspaper. Specialist stuff, with info gathered the old-fashioned way: real reporting, not press releases. And the only way to get the info is to get on a plane and go somewhere.

My editorial team goes, basically, everywhere. My own patch happens to be, mostly, Latin America, hence the frequent trips to Chile and Argentina.

Company only pays for economy, so frequently (be still, my aching sides!) upgrade myself with miles or cash, if there’s a decent deal going. At age 54 I’ve had it with long-haul travel in economy class.

Spare time is spent fiddling with motorcycles. On the back of that, I’ve got my own company now, supplying used parts for classic motorcycles. Keeps me occupied at weekends, but I can see a clash looming between that and the ‘real’ job, in the not too distant future.

ToH, interesting, i used to have my own small company supplying vintage scooters and parts, but then i tired of dealing with non enthusiasts who expected a 40 year old italian shopping bike to be like a modern twist and go.

yes, its 2 stroke..if you dont add oil it will sieze up!

I’ve wondered a few times as to the careers etc of the forum members who seem to travel so extensively…. all very interesting.

    – we moved to Switzerland 3 years ago having lived and worked in the UK and Ireland for the previous 20 years.
    – our small company is a IT/software provider to the finaicial services industry
    – I qualified in the UK as an Actuary in the 1990’s
-our Clients are all over the world but I manage Europe but spend time in Dubai, Bombay, KL, Singapore, Philippines, HKG and OZ,
    – since 1 Jan this year I’ve done 52 sectors.
    – Silver with LX, BA and Gold with Emirates, Hilton Diamond
    – I manage and choose all my travel arrangements and seek out real value so will usually select non flexible premium tickets.

    Hi
I am 52 years old , female , living with partner in Berkshire. Have been Cabin Crew for 26 years. Was orignally one of the Caledonian Girls. Travel now is very different from then. I work on 747 and 777 , so don’t go to Europe with work, but do stay at a lot of different hotel chains further afield.

In my personal time, I travel alot within Europe, using , BA Monarch, Easyjet and occassionaly Ryanair if their is no other suitable option.

Have only just started posting, but love the site. Also love this thread.

We should maybe look to update or BT profiles as there is a box there that allows us to write a few words.

You can also show your Twitter address. Mine is unsurprisingly @luganopirate Happy to follow those who follow me.

stevescoots – I restore old Jap classics for a hobby, and soon discovered that the best way to guarantee I had all the parts I needed was to buy two or three bikes, select all the best parts, and then sell the rest.

And ‘the rest’ sold, in bits, for a lot more than I paid for the complete bikes. So I had a sort of lightbulb moment and started buying complete nice classics or, better still, ‘unfinished projects’ where someone had already spend a fortune on buying the expensive stuff, and just dismantled them and sold them in bits. It worked, so I formed a company.

The rules hold good for all classics, two-wheeled or four. People will spend (say) ten grand on restoring something, and when it’s finished, it’s only worth about half that. But take it to bits again, and it’s worth ten grand. Simples.

handbag – I used to fly BCal from Tripoli, Libya, to London in the mid-1970s when we lived out there. Happy days. BAC111s were the equipment.

TiredOld Hack. Joined in 86 so only had 2 years before we got taken over. Remember the BAC 11s, not having a water boiler, just tank of hot water loaded with a tap. I do rmember the First Class Purser on Longhaul changing into her long evening skirt to serve dinner.

I go all over the world happily, often in London. Recently, LCY, LHR, SFO, RDU, VIE and CDG.
    BA gold
    AA gold for life
    UA silver
    DL silver

Travel observation of the year: The best US airline, Continental, was destroyed by the UA takeover.

That brings back memories Handbag. I was on the last BCAL flight from HKG to LGW. F was only half full with everyone asleep except me, so the Purser allowed another film to be shown which I wanted to watch, saying “they can’t do anything about it, we’ll be BA tomorrow”.
