DavidGordon10ParticipantI should add that the most stylish airport transfer available at Krakow includes a Socilaist Realism welcome with (tradional Slavic) bread and salt, and transfer in a Trabant and (for an extra fee) a Polish band. http://www.crazyguides.com/krakow_tours/communist_welcome_airport_pick_up

MartynSinclairParticipantHi Canucklad – more of a choice of the lesser of the 2 evils. Typical high charges.
Frustrating part for me, there was an LH flight departing for FRANKFURT from the next gate – why on earth did I not think if taking that flight in the first place..
No free wifi…on the coach..

TimFitzgeraldTCParticipantHi David Gordon
That is good to know. It is either Oporto or Lisbon when I get to Luso depending on price / schedule. About time they had a metro into Lisbon airport. Good if it is regular – once I had 20 minutes from aircraft doors opening to get my train from Oriente – and made it just!!
If you do ever need a taxi from Lisbon (and there is a queue) then go up to arrivals to the right and there are always loads of taxi’s waiting here – and you don’t pay the airport surcharge.

AMcWhirterParticipantThanks, David. I guess the Krakow will be getting a new rail link.
When I visited Krakow 10 years ago I took one of the Trabant car city tours and went out to Nova Huta which. as you may know, is a real Soviet-inspired suburb … it even had a Soviet WW11 tank mounted on one of the pavements (it may not be there now, of course !).
Trouble was that I didn’t feel at ease in the Trabant. Not only is the 2-cylinder engine very noisy (especially under acceleration) but the ride quality and general feeling of safety is appalling. I was glad when the trip came to an end.

DavidGordon10ParticipantAlex, when I was a visiting lecturer in East Berlin in the 1980s, my host invited me to his dacha (they used the Russian word) for the weekend. It was in delightful countryside, near Frankfurt-am-Oder. The journey was made in the family Trabi – Bert, Mrs Bert, three large children, and me.
The car was fine! – obviously a better one than used in Krakow.
A sight that is little known is a gold statue of a Trabant in the garden of the German embassy in Prague, marking the events there of 1989. If you are not a guest of the embassy, it can only be seen through a crack in the fence of a nearby childrens playground

LuganoPirateParticipantI guess this is the good old DM “accurately” reporting as always! As I said I could only verify 3 of them from personal experience so it’s good to gave the gaps filled.
I didn’t know you could get a free train ticket into town. Usually when I’ve arrived in GVA I’ve my pre-purchased ticked from the airport to either Bern or Lausanne, but I’ve used the free transport ticket given me by the hotel on many an occasion.

Stowage222ParticipantMorning NTarrant – thanks for the clarification on the LHR/LGW bus monopoly. I still fail to understand how another operator can’t make this route work and I do understand the M25 constraints and the issues of punctuality/regularity.
Anyway, I decided to ask Easybus why they don’t operate this route and this is their response:

Thank you for your email. We are working on the new routes at the moment, just added three new services to our offer. Your email will be sent to our adiministration office, for further purposes.
Kind regards,
Izabela

AMcWhirterParticipantDavidGordon – Thanks for the info. All very interesting.
LP – Re the free rail travel from GVA. The info can be found on the GVA airport website but you have to search for it. Here’s the link:
