Interesting. It was my clear understanding that there are limitations around Northolt operations – as in they have to co-ordinate westerly take-offs with LHR to avoid confliction, particularly with anything larger requiring a longer take-off profile that might, potentially, extend into LHR airspace. As RAF Northolt is also a working military base handling VIP flights as well as the relative handful of corporate jets that fly to/from there, I do wonder how they would manage the security side of loads of civvies wondering around parts of the airbase.

JasPat1ParticipantHi AnthonyDunn, I’m sure if it’ll bring in extra revenue for the MOD and the RAF, it’ll be done. Bet if Flybe get the goahead for their flight they’ll be huge security between the passenger bit and the VIP bit.
JohnHarper – I think if Flybe can use their STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) Dash 8 aircraft at LCY (London City airport), they’ll be able to use them at NHT (Northolt’s 3 letter IATA code). Was thinking the other day NHT could be also be known as North Heathrow Terminal maybe?!

BigDog.ParticipantAlex – any idea why LHR has to have so much Cargo?
I understand passenger aircraft carry non-passenger cargo however why does LHR have to be a hub for pure cargo aircraft?
What is the justification for LHR attempting to double the Cargo volumes? An opportunity for Northolt or even Farnborough instead?

AMcWhirterParticipantBigDog – I’m not a cargo specialist. But I can see the advantages that LHR offers over other UK airports.

MrMichaelParticipantThe issue with using another airport for pure cargo flights is money and transit. If for instance a container is going from Hong Kong to Madrid it may well go through LHR. It will likely come in on a cargo only flight, and go out again on a pax flight. If two airports were used it would add to the lorries trundling around the SE of England as well as increase the costs due to time, travel and importing and exporting. So to me it makes perfect sense to have a hub much like we all prefer for ourselves when transiting.

MrMichaelParticipantOn another matter but same thread. I live in SE London, pretty much where aircraft leaving the Ockham stack leave it for an approach. I do suffer from aircraft noise, and knew that when I bought our little palace. I accept we may get more aircraft, and perhaps more to come, but also am pleased they are less noisy. I recall many years ago every Sunday lunchtime a Pan Am cargo plane would fly over belching black smoke and displeasing me with a noise like I was keeping a couple of Pratt & Whitney engines in my shed! In comparison todays planes are a pleasure to listen to, if you can hear them.
Anyway, the point…
Yesterday I had some oik knock on my door to sign a petition to stop a new runway at LHR. I thought he was probably a little late for such things as the decision is due. I refused to sign to which I was subjected to all sorts of abuse that made the noise of an aircraft a welcome diversion (it was a BA 767 I think). I gave him some advice on his future if he did not leave immediately, but it did make me realise just how seriously some people take this, and themselves. I knew we would have some noise issues when I moved here, as did the vast majority of people.

canuckladParticipantEnvironmental audit committee has chucked theirtimely tuppence worth in to the debate….
“A final decision on a 3rd runway shouldn’t be made until environmental conditions have been met, with legal guarantees attached”
And so the procrastination dance begins!!

JasPat1ParticipantEnviromental audit committee…..hmmmmm.. it’s an airport, there’s going to be pollution….
Throw a cat amongst the pigeons: ‘Introduce a congestion charge for cars/all motor vehicles to enter Heathrow and use the money to directly improve public transport (allow electric or hybrid vehicles free of charge)….!!

Charles-PParticipantMrMichael – some years ago I lived in the village of Eversley which every two years saw a lot of low flying activity linked to the Farnborough Air Show.
One year we had somebody trying to organise a petition calling for the airspace over the village to be a “no fly zone” (yes he really said that). I asked him, when he called if he had moved in before 1948 which puzzled him and he replied no.
“Well in that case you are a little late because that’s when the air show began”. I still don’t think he understood the point I was attempting to make.1 Dec 2015

MrMichaelParticipantQuite right Charles. A new development in Portsmouth about 12-15 years ago (Gunwharf Quays) with luxury flats now has residents lobbying the local authority to kick out a ferry company that has its terminal close by. The Isle Of Wight ferry that has been there for over 100 years, possibly closer to 200. Frankly these people should be shot at dawn. Would be better if the ferry company lobbied to kick the residents out!

So the Red Funnel terminal should be closed owing to the whims of the residents of Gunwharf Quays…. These people are something else.

Heathrow was encroached upon by Hounslow, not the other way round.. As for the bleating’s of residents in Richmond etc….
I say , for one day only, we should have a “Back to the 70’s Historic Heathrow, fly past day !!
Qantas 707’s
Air Canada DC-8’s
BEA Tridents
BOAC VC10’s
KLM DC-9’s
Air France CaravellesGoodness, the tube and trains make more noise!!
