Plaza Premium has unveiled the latest in its Art and Lounge series, with new exhibitions of contemporary British art at two of its London airport lounges.
The group’s Heathrow T2 departures lounge is currently hosting the Flow exhibition by London-based Marcia Scott, featuring “striking abstract paintings, recent and new enchanting works experimenting with a variety of paint media such as gloss enamels, hammarite and fluorescent spray”.
Plaza Premium said that “Scott establishes new processes of mixing and moving paint, pouring directly on to the canvas, with gestural freedom; creating organic sensuous forms and flows, fused and highlighted with colour”.
Meanwhile the group’s Gatwick North Terminal lounge is hosting the Nature exhibition by English artist and poet Joe Machine, featuring “varying size original acrylic on canvas colour paintings, alongside unique monochrome scraperboards – a form of direct engraving where black India ink is hand scratched to create a fine white china clay line”.
The lounge provider said that “Machine’s distinctive figurative style walks the viewer down paths into ancient woodlands, through fields with flowers in areas of outstanding natural beauty, favourite world heritage sites and national trails, such as Avebury Stones, Coldrum and Silent Valley”.
The exhibitions will be on display until August, and Plaza Premium said that it would host ‘Meet the Artist’ sessions at both lounges this month.
The new displays follow similar initiatives at Plaza Premium lounges in Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and London in collaboration with curators Amie Conway and Alex Cousens. The group said additional exhibitions across other European departure locations are currently in the planning stages and will be announced soon.
Artwork has long been an important element of airport lounge design – the Amex Centurion Lounge at Heathrow T3 features works curated by Art Story, from artists including Carne Griffiths, Minty Sainsbury, Norman Parkinson and Stephen Marshall.
