London City Airport says queue times at security have been cut by half since the installation of new CT scanners one year ago.
London City became the first major airport in the UK to fully deploy next generation CT security scanners in April 2023, allowing passengers to pass through security without removing laptops and liquids from their hand luggage.
Passengers flying from London City Airport are also no longer restricted by the 100ml liquid rule, and can take through bottles of up to two litres.
In December 2022 the DfT announced what it called an end to the “tiny toiletries” rule by 2024, with all major airports required to replace existing 2D screening technology with more advanced CT security scanners by June of this year.
Nonetheless, not all airports are introducing new security technology at the same rate. Earlier this week the DfT granted extensions to some UK airports, including Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester, which have yet to finishing installing new-generation CT scanners, effectively abandoning the June 2024 deadline.

London City Airport is also set to complete the £12 million modernisation of its departure lounge, which includes more seating, two new dining areas, an expansion of the duty free and retail area, plus more toilet facilities.
Additionally, the airport revealed that more than half of its passengers are now travelling for leisure and to visit friends and family, despite having largely been regarded as a business hub in the past.
BA CityFlyer is resuming services to Greek islands Mykonos and Skiathos this summer, as well as increasing capacity on routes to destinations such as Berlin and Florence.
Aurigny has also recently launched a twice-daily service to London City from Guernsey, while ITA Airways, which moved its UK operation from London Heathrow to City, has recently launched two daily flights to Rome.
