Marriott has been making impressive progress towards championing sustainability across its portfolio, and it has been rewarded for its efforts with Green Key certification being awarded to eight of its Dubai hotels.

Green Key, an international sustainability certificate for tourism enterprises in more than 60 countries, is the leading standard for environmental responsibility and sustainable operations within the tourism industry. To be eligible for the certification, hotels are rated against a set of criteria examining factors such as staff involvement, food and beverage, water, waste management, energy use, and more. To have one is a clear indication to guests that the hotel or establishment is committed to reducing the environmental impact of their stay.

The eight Dubai-based Marriott hotels that have been awarded Green Key certification are the W Dubai – Mina Seyahi, The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Waterpark, Le Meridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, Aloft Dubai Airport, Aloft Al Mina, Element Dubai Airport, and Element Al Mina.

Building sustainability into business travel within the Middle East

Sebastien Weyer, cluster director of engineering at Marriott International, said: “Green Key is a standard of excellence across the hospitality and tourism industry, and we are delighted to receive the certification at eight of our Marriott properties in Dubai. It underlines our promise to our guests that by staying with us, they are helping to make a difference on an environmental level. We have put in place several initiatives over the past few years at each hotel and resort with sustainability being a huge priority for us. Receiving the Green Key is testament to the efforts of each hotel team and our guests to reduce the environmental impact of each stay and our operation.”

Some of the sustainable practices introduced at these hotels include initiatives such as an on-site water bottling plant, on-site hydroponic farming, the replacement of single-use plastic, a commitment to using sustainable hair care and body care products in guest rooms, the implementation of zero waste menus, the installation of electric vehicle chargers, linen reuse programmes, the use of green-certified cleaning products, awareness and education programmes, and the automation of electricity, water, and thermostat systems to save energy by reducing unnecessary use.
