The Sofitel Sydney Wentworth will undergo extensive refurbishment works next year, including the redesign of guest rooms and the introduction of new restaurants and bars.
Originally owned and operated by Qantas, the heritage-listed building dates back to the 1960s, and is located on Phillip Street in Sydney’s central business district.
The hotel has previously traded under the Sheraton and Rydges brands before becoming a Sofitel property in 2004, and it was acquired by a fund managed by global investment firm KKR in strategic partnership with Futuro Capital and Marprop Real Estate Investors in 2021.
The hotel underwent a minor refresh last year, but will now benefit from a AUD $60 million transformation programme, led by architecture and interior design firm Fender Katsalidis.
The property will close for six weeks on 8 January, 2024 to allow for works to take place, and the renovations are expected to be completed by Australia’s spring next year (end of the third quarter of 2024).
All 436 rooms and suites are set to be redesigned, with corridors, the club lounge and lobby areas also being renovated.
In addition a new “world class dining precinct” will be introduced, including new restaurants and bars.
Commenting on the news Karen Morris, associate principal, Fender Katsalidis said:
“We are honoured to be a part of the refurbishment of the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth, an iconic landmark on the Sydney skyline.
“Our design vision is to revitalise the guest experience while preserving the hotel’s rich cultural and social heritage, re-establishing its position as a luxury hotel destination. We are excited to be part of this city-shaping project that will breathe new life and vibrancy into this part of Sydney.”
