Lufthansa’s subsidiary City Airlines has announced plans to launch flights in the summer of 2024.

The airline was founded last year and received its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the German Federal Aviation Authority in June 2023.

City Airlines will operate flights with A319 aircraft from Munich and Frankfurt airports, and offer feeder flights for Lufthansa.

In a press release, the group described the expansion of the short-haul network as “essential for the market position Lufthansa Group and for the planned growth of the long-haul segment in the German market”.

Flights will be operated with A319 aircraft, though the group said that it is also considering the use of A220 or Embraer aircraft.

Lufthansa says that it will begin recruiting for pilots and cabin crew next month, and noted that English-speaking pilots are also being considered for cockpit roles “in order to position City Airlines for the long term”.

Jens Fehlinger, managing director of City Airlines, commented on the news:

“With City Airlines, we want to create prospects for the coming decades and secure sustainable jobs in Germany. This is the only way for us to grow and sustainably strengthen the hubs in Munich and Frankfurt.”
