Malaysia Airlines is slowly restoring capacity to Hong Kong.
The oneworld member recently upgraded Kuala Lumpur-Hong Kong from daily to 10-weekly flights, and from 30 October will again operate the route twice a day.
The airline currently operates the daily MH72/73 rotation, departing Kuala Lumpur at 0910 for a 1315 arrival into Hong Kong. The return segment leaves Hong Kong at 1435 and gets into KLIA at 1835.
From 2 August, Malaysia Airlines restored MH78/79, currently operating three times a week and scheduled to return to daily operations from 30 October.
MH78 departs KLIA at 1950 and arrives in Hong Kong just before midnight. The aircraft then overnights at HKIA and returns to Kuala Lumpur the following morning as MH79 at 0845, arriving back in Malaysia at 1250.
Malaysia Airlines currently deploys a combination of Airbus A330 long-haul aircraft and Boeing 737 regional jets on Kuala Lumpur-Hong Kong. In the past, it even flew its now-gone A380 superjumbos between the cities.
The former feature lie-flat beds in business class across an alternating 1-2-1/1-2-2 configuration, and in economy class the layout is 2-4-2.
The regionally configured 737s have recliners in recliners in the premium cabin, in a 2-2 setup, while economy class is in a 3-3 configuration.
Other oneworld member and Malaysia Airlines codeshare partner, Cathay Pacific, currently flies between Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur three times a day, all on A330-300 aircraft, some with lie-flat cabins, others with recliners.
Malaysia Airlines will soon upgrade its regional fleet with new Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. It currently has 25 of these on order, with the first delivery expected later this month.
These will gradually be deployed across the domestic and international networks, including on some longer intra-Asia services, such as Kuala Lumpur-Kathmandu, and Kuala Lumpur-Manila.
From 2024, Malaysia Airlines will also start taking delivery of 20 on-order long-haul Airbus A330 neo aircraft. These will operate alongside its new-technology A350-900s.
