China Airlines, the Taiwan-based SkyTeam carrier, has announced an expansion of its codesharing agreement with Philippine Airlines.
This latest initiative comes amid strong post-Covid demand for flights between Taiwan and the Philippines, the airlines say.
The new codeshare additions include Taipei-Cebu and Kaohsiung-Manila routes operated by China Airlines, as well as connecting flights to regional Filipino destinations on Philippine Airlines.
China Airlines and Philippine Airlines have long operated the existing Taipei-Manila route as a codeshare flight. The new codeshares now being added include the Taipei-Cebu route (CI705/706) with five flights a week, the Kaohsiung-Manila route (CI711/712) with four flights a week, as well as the Manila-Cebu, Manila-Davao, Manila-Iloilo, Cebu-Davao, and Cebu-Iloilo routes operated by Philippine Airlines.
With these latest codeshares, China Airlines now offers flights to eight destinations in the Philippines
Travelers departing from the Philippines can also easily connect on to China Airlines services to Europe and North America.
Last week, China Airlines added its sixth destination in Europe – an Airbus A350-900 service to Prague.
In addition to Philippine Airlines, China Airlines currently has codeshare agreements with other SkyTeam airlines including KLM, Air France, Air Europa, ITA Airways, Garuda Indonesia and Czech Airlines, but also with other non-SkyTeam members including Bangkok Airways and German railway operator Deutsche Bahn.
As for Philippine Airlines, the Manila-based flag carrier also is back on a growth spurt after it restructured and shed aircraft during the pandemic.
The flag carrier recently noted that it was actively engaged in coordinating with its suppliers and service partners to re-activate more aircraft that have been parked for extended periods while awaiting replacement engines and parts.
