Capella Hotels and Resorts has debuted in Sydney with a property in the city’s Sandstone Precinct.

Capella Sydney has opened following a seven-year restoration and renovation of the Department of Education building by Pontiac Land. The building, designed in the 1900s by NSW government architect George McRae, occupies an entire city block and is close to Circular Quay, the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

Guests enter the hotel via the Farrer Place lobby, which features a ground-floor collection of acquired and commissioned art by a variety of Australian artists along with a large robotic lighting installation ‘Meadow’ by Dutch art duo DRIFT.

The lounge area, named Aperture, occupies the original courtyard of the old building. From here, guests can access Brasserie 1930 and McRae Bar, both of which feature cuisine in collaboration with The Bentley Group. The ground floor is also home to the brand’s Living Room space, a private area for in-house guests.

The hotel comprises 192 rooms and suites across nine levels, replete with standalone bathtubs, Italian Frette linen and a bespoke collection of vegan amenities designed in partnership with skincare brand Haeckels.

Further facilities include the Auriga spa, complete with a 20-metre heated indoor pool, on the sixth floor as well as a cultural programme which includes experiences such as a two-hour walking tour of the area.

Cristiano Rinaldi, president of Capella Hotel Group, commented:

“The opening of Capella Sydney is a milestone moment in the company’s global expansion. This launch represents a significant opportunity for Capella to showcase its refined and curated offerings to Sydney and its visitors, and we look forward to amplifying the stories, culture and experiences of the city through a uniquely Capella lens.”

Capella Hotels and Resorts currently has a portfolio of properties in Singapore, Ubud, Bangkok, Hanoi, Shanghai and Hainan. Future openings are planned for destinations including Japan, Maldives and South Korea.

The group is a member of DISCOVERY, a multi-brand loyalty programme representing a collection of 40 independent hotel brands in over 100 countries worldwide.
