As per the latest directive issued by the Maharashtra government, local trains in Mumbai will be open to the general public starting from February 1, 2021.

However, there are fixed time slots:

  • The general public is allowed to travel before 0700 hours from the start of the first service for the day.
  • Between noon until 1600 hours
  • After 2100 hours until the last scheduled train

The decision was taken after Maharashtra’s chief minister Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting regarding the resumption of suburban train services.

Currently, only certain categories of commuters are allowed to travel in local trains including essential workers and women travellers. They are allowed to travel with a special pass request.
