Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) hosted its first-ever virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM) today.
Key subjects of discussion ranged from the launch of Jio 5G services to JioMeet, the brand’s video conferencing app that has been downloaded by over five million users, since its release a few days ago.
The brand’s strategic partnership with Facebook, Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and Mubadala in the UAE were also highlighted by Mukesh Ambani, chairman, managing director, and largest shareholder of Reliance Industries.
Key announcements include:
- Google will be investing ₹33,737 crore for a 7.7 per cent stake in Reliance’s digital arm, Jio Platforms. Earlier Google had announced a ₹75,000 crore digitisation for India’s digital economy. Details here.
- Jio to launch 5G, (5G is the next-gen of mobile broadband) which will be the country’s first 5G network.
- Google and Jio to roll out a new Android-based operating system, which will be used to build affordable smartphones.
- Among Jio’s latest product is Jio Glass, mixed reality glasses offering immersive experiences for users.
- Alongside Jio Glass, Jio TV Plus was also announced. Jio TV Plus will feature aggregated content from over 12 leading global OTT(Over-the-top media services) players such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney + Hotstar, Voot, SonyLiv, Zee5, Jio Cinema, Jio Saavn, Youtube among others.
- The online grocery delivery service Jio Mart is also developed. The beta version of Jio Mart grocery platform is being piloted in 200 cities with daily orders crossing 2.5 lakh. “JioMart and WhatsApp will be working closely to create growth opportunities for millions of small Indian merchants and enable customers seamlessly transact with kirana shops,” said Ambani.
