Intercontinental Hotels Group has opened a Venice property under its high-end boutique brand Hotel Indigo.

The 75-room Hotel Indigo Venice Sant’Elena takes its name from the island on the eastern tip of the city where it is located.

The former 1930s monastery has two wings, joined in the centre by a former chapel, and features an inner courtyard and private garden.

Interiors include velvet pillows on leather seating, brass lighting, dark wood panelling on walls, marbled paper art and a green marble bar top.

Savor Restaurant and Bar, pictured below, serves a traditional Venetian menu and exclusive dishes created by chef Giovanni Montella.

Hotel Manager Marco Costa commented: “The hotel is the perfect example of how Hotel Indigo draws inspiration from the local neighbourhood, bringing to life the historical importance of the building through design while also providing the ideal getaway from the busyness of Venice.”

Last year Hotel Indigo opened UK properties in Manchester and Durham, and a Chester property is due to open later this year.

Venice sees more than 25 million tourists each year.

Earlier this year, Hyatt opened a 119-room property in Murano, north of Venice, under its Centric brand.

Future openings by large brands include Rosewood Hotels and Resorts in 2020 and Canopy by Hilton in 2021.
